The ‘about us’ and ‘who we are’ page

When I visit the website of a new or untried company, the ‘about page’ is usually my second port of call. If I like what I see on the product page I want to know who they are. This is the place that can make or break the sale.
For most people I recon it is the same. In this age of anonymous global communication we still crave some kind of relationship with those we trade with. We want to know something about their personality. Do we like them? Do we like what they stand for? Can we trust them?

For me the one thing that makes me like a person is a sense of humor. Have they got ability to not take themselves too seriously? To be self deprecating? For me that is a strength. It means they are open to criticism therefore open to helping me with what I want.

The dull page 🙁

When looking through the staff pages of many websites I find some to be pretty uninspired. The text can come over as worthy, serious and frankly dull. The photos are typically airbrushed corporate mug shots of toothy, smartly dressed but anonymous strangers, lacking in personality and definitely not attracting my interest.
Of course there are great designers out there who do a fantastic job and there are many excellent examples of highly original and well thought out staff presentations.

I ‘d like to share with you my original alternative 🙂

As a caricature artist, I have been drawing witty little portraits for websites and business use for a number of years now. It is strange that the more serious the business the better the caricature seems to work. I have supplied lawyers, insurance brokers, real-estate agents, IT firms and many others with fun drawings for their websites and more. Those that adopt this idea find it works for them and I am asked at regular intervals to update the drawings as the staff change. I believe they become loyal to the idea because my drawings lend their personnel a fun, outgoing identity. They get positive feedback from their clients. It is a light touch that makes them appear more friendly, approachable and humane than they would seem with the old style corporate photos.
